December's Copenhagen talks were a setback. The world failed last year to come to a legally binding agreement. But in every one of 198 countries, from presidents and prime ministers to community activists, there is now an understanding of urgency and a commitment to act.

Simon Hughes tribute to Peter Moore

It is very difficult to imagine public life in London without Peter Moore. Peter was such a large part of so many major occasions - and known to so many. He was known to hundreds if not thousands personally and tens of thousands by his activities and his reputation.

Simon Hughes speech to mark 100 years of the Basic State Pension
Speech delivered on Sun 14th Sep 2008
In 1889 the Rev F H Stead warden of the Browning Settlement organised a meeting in Browning Hall off the Walworth Road in my constituency to start a campaign for a state pension. This led to the national campaign spearheaded by the National Committee of Organised Labour for a free state pension of 5 shillings a week.
