Simon Hughes MP and Southwark Lib Dems have spoken out against the cuts to Southwark's fire services.
The Liberal Democrats have restated calls to protect Southwark's fire stations after the Mayor of London said he would push ahead with planned cuts to London's fire service.
Mayor Boris Johnson's proposals would see 12 stations shut across the capital, 520 jobs axed and 18 fire engines taken out of use. The plans include closing Southwark fire station and reducing Peckham's service from two fire engines down to one.
Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Simon Hughes said today:
"I support 100% my Liberal Democrat colleagues on the GLA and the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority in opposing the plans to close a fire station in Southwark Bridge Road in my constituency, and other London fire stations."
"We are paying the price of a wrong policy by the Mayor of London, who put a small reduction in the council tax precept over the best interests of the safety of Londoners."
