Southwark and Lewisham College have announced that they will be moving forward on plans for a New Secondary School and University Technical College on their Bermondsey Campus.
Plans in their estates strategy include a new Secondary School, a UTC and Further Education provision all on the same site, although some Southwark College classes will move to the Waterloo Campus.
Campaigning for a new secondary school was one of Simon Hughes' personal political priorities for the last two years and was one of his local election commitments at the last election.
Commenting on the proposals, Simon Hughes said:
"It looks at last as if our battle to have a new secondary school in the north of the Borough has been won.
"The campaign which I and many of my constituents have fought for many years is now in sight of the finish line.
"I will not give up working on this issue until the new school and the University Technical College are built and open on the Scott Lidgett site and I will do all I can to make sure that Southwark College can remain as the third part of a Great Educational Campus for the people in the North of the Borough."
