Simon Hughes today welcomed the drop in unemployment in Bermondsey and old Southwark. In the latest monthly unemployment figures released today there were 187 fewer people unemployed in December 2012 than the previous month in Bermondsey and Old Southwark and 275 fewer than December 2011. Across Southwark, the job seekers allowance claimant rate was 4.9% which is down from 5.2% a year before. Nationally, the country is now at its lowest levels of unemployment in 18 months.
Commenting on the figures Simon Hughes said:
'This is good news for the many people who have found jobs in Bermondsey and Old Southwark and should be encouraging for the many still looking for work.
'Increasing employment is one of the most positive signals that we are leaving the economic crisis.
'Liberal Democrats are making sure that work pays by raising, every year. The level at which people start paying income tax so that they can keep more of their wages. And we will do this again in April this year.'
