Simon Hughes MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark has called on Southwark council to do more to ensure that postal workers can deliver mail to residents living on council estates.
Currently, trade access buttons that don't work or are not answered are preventing postal workers from delivering mail. Yet when the problem was raised with the council, Royal Mail was told nothing could be done. Local Royal Mail managers then called on local MP Simon Hughes to insist upon action from the council.
Simon said:
"It is simply not good enough for the council to say that they cannot do anything about this. I am told that the postal workers regularly can't get into over 20 council blocks to deliver mail to residents.
"This is absolutely unacceptable as it is vital that people receive their mail, including bills and important correspondence, on time. The council must act urgently to ensure that postal workers can do their job and deliver people's mail".
