Today (Saturday, 13th May) Simon Hughes, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark received the Honorary Freedom of Southwark, along with actor Sir Michael Caine and six others at a Civic Awards Ceremony at St George's Cathedral. Speaking after the event, Simon said:
"It was a great honour for me to be one of those who received the honorary freedom of our borough at the splendid ceremony in St George's Cathedral today. I am very grateful to Southwark council for agreeing to give me this honour.
"I warmly congratulate all those others who also received Southwark's honorary freedom today, and those many individuals and organisations who were honoured by the Civic Association and the borough in different ways at the ceremony. Our borough truly is blessed with many people who give great service, locally, to our city and to our country.
"My honour is however not just an honour for me, and I pay tribute to all those who have worked with me in my community and public activities in this borough for 35 years. My Liberal and Liberal Democrat colleagues - members, party officers and councillors; all my staff team members, volunteer helpers and supporters, and my family, particularly mother and brothers, have given so much support over so many years."
