Labour u-turn after Lib Dem and community pressure on nurseries

May 9, 2012 4:00 PM

Local parents in Newington and South Bermondsey will be celebrating today after the news that Labour Southwark have been forced to put their plans to end childcare at Tenda Road and Bishop's House nurseries on hold.

South Bermondsey Councillor, Graham Neale, who has worked closely with local parents to oppose the plans, said:

"This is a victory for people power. I'm honoured to have worked with so many dedicated local campaigners in the fight to keep the Tenda Road and Bishop's House nurseries open and I'm pleased that Labour will look again.

"It was unacceptable for Labour to try and press ahead with their plans without consulting the community. Since their plans came to light, local parents have collected 2,000 signatures opposing the closure and this strength of feeling cannot be ignored. I will continue to work with local parents to keep the pressure on and make the case to keep Tenda Road and Bishop's House nurseries open."

If you are a resident of the Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
