Simon Hughes, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, has raised in a meeting with the Metropolitan Police Commissioner residents' concerns about the level of helicopter noise over Southwark at night.
Following several complaints by residents living in the north of the borough near the Thames, Simon Hughes MP raised the issue of noise disturbance with both the Civil Aviation Authority and Bernard Hogan-Howe, Metroplitan Police Commissioner.
Southwark falls within the London City Control Zone (LCCZ) and although aircraft noise is not considered a statutory nuisance in the UK, there are rules and procedures for flights in the LCCZ.
Simon Hughes said:
"I am, of course, concerned to hear that my constituents are facing sleepless nights because of helicopter noise. Helicopters hovering over the top of your home make an incredible amount of noise and when there seems to be no reason for such activity, I understand why people find this incredibly frustrating.
I therefore raised this matter personally with the Police Commissioner and was reassured that he takes the matter seriously and is conscious of the problems police helicopters cause London residents. The Police Commissioner will respond formally in writing to me regarding these concerns and I will continue to do all that I can to ensure that disruption from police helicopters is kept to a minimum."
