Simon Hughes, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark has congratulated Caroline Pidgeon on her re-election as a Liberal Democrat Assembly Member and thanked Rob Blackie for all his campaigning efforts, while warning Labour that London elections have little impact on the outcome of following council or parliamentary elections. Speaking today, Simon said:
"I congratulate Boris Johnson on his re-election as Mayor of London and Val Shawcross on her re-election as Assembly Member for Southwark and Lambeth.
"It is really good that Caroline Pidgeon, a Liberal Democrat councillor in Southwark for many years and a Southwark resident, has been re-elected to lead for the Liberal Democrats in City Hall.
"I also thank Rob Blackie for his very good campaign as our candidate at a difficult time for the government parties in all local elections.
"The London elections have always seen the strongest Labour and Conservative votes in Southwark, including my constituency, because most voters have voted for either the Conservative or Labour Mayoral candidates. But history shows this has had little impact on following council or parliamentary elections in Southwark.
"Although Labour won the largest number of votes across most of the constituency in the last London elections four years ago, I was privileged to have my highest ever vote in eight elections at the general election in 2010. I shall work hard to make sure there is a similar result in the next general election."
