Labour Southwark refuse to cap staff pay at Prime Minister’s salary

February 8, 2012 1:00 PM

At last night's Overview & Scrutiny Meeting, Labour Councillors refused to back a Liberal Democrat proposal to cap the salary of senior council officials at £142,500 (the salary of the Prime Minister).

The proposals were put forward as part of a discussion over a consultation document from the Labour leader about restructuring the council's top management structure.

Councillors raised further concerns about the authenticity of the 'consultation' after a request to consider alternate models, such as the more democratic committee system, were scoffed by Labour.

Cllr Cathy Bowman, Chair of the Overview & Scrutiny Committee, said:

"Rather than reshaping the council so that it delivers better services for local rate payers, the Labour leader seems only interested in giving himself more power.

"He says he wants to consult widely on a new model but has already ruled out a return to committees or a directly elected mayor. It's a sham consultation."

If you are a resident of the Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
