On Friday 9th December, Simon Hughes MP, chair of the school governors, was the host at the opening ceremony of the expanded St James' Church of England Primary School, which is now on two sites. St James' Primary School has merged with the former Alma Primary School, and now runs from two sites, in Old Jamaica Road and Alexis Street.
The ceremony started with welcomes from Simon Hughes and was followed by a dedication service by the Rt. Revd. Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark.
Floella Benjamin unveiled a plaque at each site to commemorate the merging of the two schools. Baroness Benjamin, who worked as a presenter on the hit children's television programme Playschool, is a passionate advocate for education, now also in the House of Lords. The biography of Baroness Benjamin, who lives in south London, is attached.
Simon Hughes was appointed as the government's Advocate for Access to Education in December 2010. After extensively touring the country visiting schools and college, he submitted his report in July 2011. (The report can be viewed on the Cabinet Office website at http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/sites/default/files/resources/education-advocate-report.pdf).
Simon Hughes said:
"I am proud to see the successful expansion of St James' Primary School and its merger with Alma School. It is hugely important that local children have the best facilities to give them the best start in life. I thank all the teachers and other staff for their very hard work in making this merger possible, and I pay special tribute to Mrs Karen Willis, the Headteacher, for her great leadership which has brought this about."
