On Sunday, Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Simon Hughes joined over 100 disabled children and their families who danced, sang, played percussion and did craft activities at an event at Henry Wood Hall in Southwark. The event was organised by the charity Create, which ran this creative:space interactive music activity. There were also inspiring performances by the renowned pianist Derek Paravicini, a musical savant who is blind and has severe learning difficulties, and by the Adriano Adewale Group.
The charity's Co-Founder and Executive Director, Nicky Goulder, said of Sunday's event: "So many disabled children love and have a talent for music but their access to traditional concerts is often restricted because their behaviour can be deemed 'inappropriate'. It was such a joy to see everyone able to be themselves and have fun."
Creative:space was launched by Create in 2005 following extensive and ongoing consultation with disability organisations and families with disabled children. Their events are carefully designed to make high quality music and other creative activities accessible to disabled children and allow them to access music in a safe, relaxed environment. The events create an environment in which disabled children and their families and enjoy social time together, feel special and have fun in an informal environment specifically tailored to their needs.
Speaking after the event, Simon Hughes said: "It was delightful to attend a Create event at Henry Wood Hall. Create has put an enormous effort into designing its creative:space sessions so that disabled children can experience and participate in superb musical activities. I look forward to seeing Create continue to flourish and I thank them for providing so many children and families - some of them from south London - with such an enjoyable experience."
