Liberal Democrats highlight risks to public as CCTV footage on buses destroyed after just one week

August 27, 2009 12:00 AM

Simon Hughes, Liberal Democrat MP for North Southwark and Bermondsey, and Caroline Pidgeon, Liberal Democrat London Assembly Member, have been alarmed to discover that CCTV footage on buses is only kept for one week. After being contacted by a constituent who was allegedly assaulted by a driver on a 42 bus, Simon was shocked to discover the Transport for London and East Thames Buses had no record of the incident because CCTV footage had been destroyed.

Simon has been in touch with the Commissioner of Transport for London. Commenting on the situation, Simon said "I am really concerned that valuable evidence is being destroyed. It may take more than a week for the need to look at CCTV to be identified and I have asked the Commissioner to review and improve their policy."

Caroline Pidgeon, who chairs the London Assembly Transport Committee at City Hall, has also taken the issue up and has put a question to the Mayor of London for the September Mayor's Question Time.

If you are a resident of the Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
