North Southwark & Bermondsey MP Simon Hughes, Southwark Liberal Democrats and local residents and service users are continuing the fight against the closure of the 24 hour emergency mental health clinic at the Maudsley Hospital.
Despite a long campaign, public meetings, a debate in the House of Commons and a meeting of local MPs with the Secretary of State for Health the Government is sticking by its decision to close the clinic.
In a direct appeal to the Prime Minister in waiting, Gordon Brown MP, last week campaigners collected hundreds of signatures which were presented in the House of Commons by Simon Hughes MP. The petition calls for the closure of the emergency clinic to be postponed until the new Prime Minister and new health ministers have a chance to review the situation.
Commenting, Simon Hughes MP said:
"The 24 hour clinic is a vital service for people across south London, but despite many meetings, petitions and a debate in the House of Commons, the Government still refuses to change its mind about the closure.
"I hope that the Secretary of State for Health will postpone the clinic's closure until the new Prime Minister is in place so he and his new health team can review the situation and save this service for local people."
