Responding to Jack Straw's call for Britain to develop its own national story, Liberal Democrat President, Simon Hughes MP said:
"Jack Straw is right to say there is a need to redefine the character and implications of being British.
"Commitment to the rule of law, human rights and the independence of judges are all traditional British characteristics. But the Government can't expect everybody to sign up to these common values when it too often ignores them itself.
"There will be greater commitment to a multicultural Britain in the future if people are also allowed to take decisions for themselves in their own local communities, and when we also celebrate the four great nations of the United Kingdom and the proud regions we come from."
