Commenting on the Lord Chancellor's call for a change in the perception of the Human Rights Act, Liberal Democrat Shadow Constitutional Affairs Secretary, Simon Hughes MP said:
"Thank goodness the Lord Chancellor has now realised that the Government's wobbling on the human rights convention did nobody any good.
"Human Rights are important to the child needing protection at school, the old person needing decent treatment in a care home and the woman needing protection by the courts from an abusive partner.
"These are not laws aimed at helping a minority of criminals and terrorists. These are laws for everyone to make sure we all are guaranteed proper standards by the law of the land.
"If the Government had been clear from the beginning and sold the benefit of human rights consistently for the last ten years we wouldn't have had to listen to some of the nonsense of the last few months."
