Commenting ahead of Cabinet discussions today on the White Paper on House of Lords Reform, Liberal Democrat Shadow Constitutional Affairs Secretary, Simon Hughes MP said:
"Progress on Lords reform is welcome and long overdue.
"However, the Government is still being too timid. In the 21st century it must be right that the majority of people in the second chamber of Parliament are elected by the public, on whose behalf they work.
"My strong sense is that the mood of the Commons will be for a majority to be elected in the upper house. I hope that 80% elected will be the option that wins the day.
"The Liberal Democrats are clear that we must have a wholly or at least mainly elected second chamber."
