Co-ordinated national strategy on fraud in everybody's interest

March 15, 2007 12:00 AM

Responding to the Attorney General's announcement on the Fraud Review Liberal Democrat Shadow Attorney General Simon Hughes MP said:

"There is total agreement about the harm caused by fraud to individuals, companies and the national economy.

"A central place to report fraud is a good start, provided it has the necessary resources to ensure all allegations are efficiently pursued.

"Giving the City of London police the lead investigative role is also a wise move, again provided they have the resources to deliver.

"And Liberal Democrats support specialist judges and better prospects for plea bargaining, but absolutely not the abolition of juries in our higher courts.

"A coordinated national strategy to reduce fraud is in everybody's interest. And the biggest priority must always be to make sure that the big fraudsters are first in the firing line - and first to be stopped in their tracks."

If you are a resident of the Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
