Commenting on the consultation process launched today to decide whether to give prisoners the right to vote, Liberal Democrat Shadow Constitutional Affairs Secretary, Simon Hughes MP said:
"The European Court of Human Rights has made clear that a blanket denial of votes to prisoners is unlawful.
"A consultation about what the changes in the law should be is a reasonable response.
"There is a strong case that unconvicted prisoners on remand and prisoners serving shorter sentences who will soon be back in society should retain their votes if we are serious about rehabilitation."
