Commenting on the Government's response to the Cunningham proposals for the reform of the House of Lords, Liberal Democrat Shadow Constitutional Affairs Secretary, Simon Hughes MP said:
"It is good that the Government has accepted the all-party view that the powers of the Lords should not be reduced.
"Labour went into the last election wanting to reduce the powers of the
Lords, but has now realised that reducing the powers of the second chamber may be appealing to the government of the day but that governments can quickly become oppositions.
"We can now start the new year more optimistic about the chance for reform in the Palace of Westminster. A mainly elected second chamber is now possible. The powers of the second chambers are not going to be reduced.
"This is good news for all who support a strong democratic parliament effectively in holding the government of the day to account."
