Commenting on today's Law Commission report Murder, Manslaughter and Infanticide, Liberal Democrat Shadow Constitutional Affairs Secretary, Simon Hughes MP said:
"The Liberal Democrats broadly welcome the Law Commission proposals. However, we would like to have seen the inclusion of recommendations for sentencing for second degree murder.
"Judges should be given discretion on those killings which are not pre-meditated or intended, rather than requiring them to give mandatory life sentences.
"Cases of murder can vary from the case of Tom ap Rhys Pryce to that of a woman who strikes out at her husband after 40 years of abuse, and the judge should have the discretion to distinguish between the two."
